    Day One In Paradise

After yesterday’s comic misadventures in travel, today was an easy, perfect day in paradise. We’re not a big couple for grand gestures and super-elaborate plans; we’re more in the “play it by ear” mode of operations. But David had tucked a Valentine’s Day card in his bag and this morning he made coffee and brought me “breakfast in bed.”   Okay, so it was a breakfast bar, because we got in so late last night we didn’t want to take the time to go to the grocery store to stock up. We woke up relatively late for the first morning…

    Mauipocalypse

Somewhere Over The Pacific I always wanted to start of with an evocative dateline, full of the mystery and intrigue of travel. However, this trip is starting ought to be one of slapstick and misdirection. Several months ago, when planning this trip, I booked us on connecting flights Chicago-Maui, because the nonstops were about $1300 each and connections on American via Dallas were about $900 or so. I didn’t want the early set of connecting flights because the time in Dallas was too short; also the fare was lower. Who knew Texas, and indeed 49 out of 50 states would…

    Sex In A Phonebooth

We naive Americans apparently think that’s what they’re for, according to London’s deputy mayor. BBC NEWS | UK | England | London | Sex card challenge to phone firms Kit Malthouse, London’s deputy mayor for policing, wants the numbers on sex calling cards found in telephone boxes blocked as soon as they are identified. He said mobile phone numbers were valuable to those behind the sex industry and should be cut off. The deputy mayor has invited Vodafone, Orange, O2, 3, Virgin and T-Mobile to meet him. Mr Malthouse said: “If you are an American tourist and if you walk…

Folk Life 2009, and a few bloggy bits

Here are some of the photos I took on our recent trip to Seattle for the Folk Life festival… there’s not really a narrative, but I wanted to give an idea of the color and sheer energy that goes on there. We had arrived very late the night before, due to a delay on United. We went for a walk in the morning after breakfast around the neighborhood near the hotel, walking up 5th Ave. North on Seattle’s Queen Anne Hill to get to a spot where there was a nice viewpoint. Although I’ve never eaten at this particular restaurant,…

    End of the Oregon Trail

Overnighting in Seaside, walking the Prom UPDATE: Seaside, Oregon is definitely a place I’d visit again, perhaps as a base for exploring and photographing the Oregon Coast. We picked it at random as it was about as far as we felt driving the first day, after going through Astoria and Tillamook (did stop for some squeaky-cheese curds, which I worked on all day). Seaside is one of those places that’s got some authentic charm and history, although there are a lot of big new high-rises along the prime beachfront spots of its classic “Prom” or promenade. You can see the…

We stopped at this funky local place after crossing a bridge from a very industrial area of southern Washington into Oregon. It was a pleasant surprise once inside, full of quirky decor and homey touches. The…

    Golden Gardens Sunset

Ginny I can has iPhone? Via: Flickr Title: Golden Gardens Sunset By: GinnyRED57 Originally uploaded: 25 May ’09, 10.31pm CDT PST UPDATE: When I lived in Seattle, I sometimes rode my bike or the bus out to Golden Gardens Park in the afternoon. It’s just a really nice place to spend some time. David and I walked along, smelling the smoke from a number of campfires on the beach (the parks department provides big iron fireboxes). It was the end of the Memorial Day weekend, but plenty of people were there to grill, picnic, chill, or even get married (there…
