Could there be a psychological or neurological reason why some people tend to be conservative, while others tend to be liberal? Possibly; and it might extend to how people think about new scientific ideas, political concepts, and even matters of faith. This might explain a lot about the current divide between the liberal and conservative wings of various Protestant churches, including my own. The “persistent in their judgements” sure sounds familiar. So does the “structured” model versus “anything goes, you adorable herd of cat-nuns” model. Their brains are different from our brains! Their zombies won’t eat our brainsssss, and our…

From the ongoing discussion at Father Jake’s regarding the protest of border-crossing Bishop Akinola in Wheaton: a commenter has posted a press release from Changing Attitudes Nigeria director Davis Mac-Iyalla, the gay Anglican activist from Nigeria who is now living in exile in Togo. He regrets that he probably won’t be able to arrange a visa and funds for travel in time to walk the picket line. Father Jake Stops the World: Protest Against Abp. Akinola on September 23 Changing Attitude Nigeria fully supports the plans of peaceful demonstration against our homophobic Archbishop Peter Akinola. Archbishop Peter Akinola keeps refusing…

The Lead The article talks about Bishop Persell’s commitment to trying to find a middle ground that will [enable? help?]the Church to comprehend different understandings of how to be Christian in the world I missed this article from June; I just noticed it because I was checking background on a more timely news story detailed below. +William Persell is my bishop and I know how hard he’s worked to try to keep lines of communication open. I’ll do my best to remember it in the coming weeks, as clearly he would wish us all to do. The article mentions Fr.…

Remember: Harare is the seat of the “Bad Bishop of Harare” that I’ve blogged about before. As stories in African web publications can disappear behind archive screens, or be withdrawn if someone important enough repudiates them, I’ve quoted the whole thing. Meanwhile, the Central African synod ousted a progressive bishop who called for moderation on the gay clergy issue at their meeting in Malawi. The scandalous “not fit to live” remarks by Bishop Orama of Uyo, Nigeria have been removed from the UPI website, but the “Akinola Repent” blog thoughtfully saved the article as a PDF. AFP: Zimbabwe Anglican church…

Things are about to get interesting in the Diocese of Chicago, in the “ancient Chinese curse” sense, so I went in search of a spiritual or musical unicorn chaser to get me in a better frame of mind. After yesterday’s horrifying screed from a Nigerian bishop named Orama put me off reading the Internets tubes for a day, a friend emailed me to say that the Archbishop of All Nigeria will be speaking in the Chicago suburbs later in September, in support of some congregations that broke away to affiliate with the Anglican Church of Rwanda (bah, no linky-love for…

BBC NEWS | Africa | Uganda church anoints US bishop Much of the Anglican Church in Africa is conservative and deeply opposed to the ordination of gay priests. In February, Anglican bishops meeting in Tanzania issued an ultimatum to the American church, demanding an end to the appointment of gay clergy and the blessing of same-sex couples. US bishops have until 30 September to respond. I haven’t had much to say about this issue of cross-border ordinations and consecrations, although it’s irksome to me personally. As anyone who’s slogged through posts on this blog will know, I’m in favor of gays…
