Mike Huckabee seems like a great guy; funny, talented, self-deprecating, and refreshingly moderate in some of his actions as governor of Arkansas. It’s easy to discount his “former Baptist minister” label, but some of his strongest supporters hold some mighty scary views. Mike Huckabee’s radical religious friends | Salon News

Is it a problem if creationists have their own academic journal, giving them a forum for publishing their theories in a “peer-reviewed,” theologically literalist setting for a Bible-believing readership? Well, it is if they are permitted to lie about their identities in order to hide their association with said journal, and said “peers,” at least until they get a little more academic seniority in their fields. And it is if they publish under their own names but use the fact of publication in a journal with rigorous biblical standards but not-so-rigorous scientific standards to pad their resumes or make them…

Sometimes I read the letters to the editor to the Salt Lake Tribune and feel like jeering. Occasionally, I read the letters and feel like cheering. Today, I feel like wearing balloons and a party hat and waving flags, because an “old Mormon bishop” wrote a righteous, inspiring letter. Now this really rare for me, approving of the opinions of LDS bishops, and I wanted to save the whole letter because they go off the SL Trib website so fast. It’s to do with that idiot Buttars, of course: I cannot pick up my copy of The Tribune on any morning and not read how our…

Inclusive Church blog: Our sound is our wound: audio of an address by the Revd Canon Lucy Winkett A long, but very interesting address from last fall’s Inclusive Church conference, “Drenched in Grace.” Best line: “We talk in the Church about modern music. Since yesterday, the website of the Anglican Church of Nigeria has been completely redesigned. Not only is retired Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold’s picture with Archbishop Akinola gone, but the picture above it with the Archbishop of Canterbury is gone too. They used to have a Flash animation splash page, which now seems to be the header image, with only Archbishop Akinola’s image, with a big pulsating purple cross. Guess we can expect a statement soon.

Truth and consequences- Pasadena Weekly As the president of Integrity USA, the 30-year-old national Episcopal lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization, the Rev. Susan Russell has been at the forefront of some of the boldest, most inclusive and most controversial policy statements of any church leader in America. She’s also the convener of “Claiming the Blessing,†a national ministry focused on the full inclusion…

I’m home sick today, listening to the BBC News Hour on WBEZ. There’s been a lot about the Archbishop of Canterbury’s recent comments regarding sharia law in Britain. Here’s part of what he actually said, which was in a BBC News interview before a lecture before legal academics, where he went into more detail: In an BBC interview before the lecture, Dr Williams said: “Certain provisions of sharia are already recognised in our society and under our law; so it’s not as if we’re bringing in an alien and rival system. . . There is a place for finding what…

Yes! This is what we hoped to see: Chicago’s new Episcopal bishop, national leader speak up for gay clergy — chicagotribune.com Chicago’s new Episcopal bishop and the church’s national leader sent a clear message Sunday about where they stand on gay clergy, a smoldering issue that threatens to tear apart the denomination.Wrapping up a five-day tour in honor of Jeffrey Lee, the new Chicago bishop, Katharine Jefferts Schori declared that the American church will not stand alone in its support of gay clergy during an international meeting in July in Lambeth, England. “Many more [bishops] than you might expect are…
