    Musical Unicornery

Things are about to get interesting in the Diocese of Chicago, in the “ancient Chinese curse” sense, so I went in search of a spiritual or musical unicorn chaser to get me in a better frame of mind. After yesterday’s horrifying screed from a Nigerian bishop named Orama put me off reading the Internets tubes for a day, a friend emailed me to say that the Archbishop of All Nigeria will be speaking in the Chicago suburbs later in September, in support of some congregations that broke away to affiliate with the Anglican Church of Rwanda (bah, no linky-love for…

BBC NEWS | Africa | Uganda church anoints US bishop

BBC NEWS | Africa | Uganda church anoints US bishop Much of the Anglican Church in Africa is conservative and deeply opposed to the ordination of gay priests. In February, Anglican bishops meeting in Tanzania issued an ultimatum to the American church, demanding an end to the appointment of gay clergy and the blessing of same-sex couples. US bishops have until 30 September to respond. I haven’t had much to say about this issue of cross-border ordinations and consecrations, although it’s irksome to me personally. As anyone who’s slogged through posts on this blog will know, I’m in favor of gays…

Crooks and Liars » Bush’s Homophobic Surgeon General Nominee Charged With Conflicts Of Interest – Funnels Millions From Church George Bush’s nominee for Surgeon General has drawn a lot of heat for among other things, his crack-pot anti-gay views as a leader in the United Methodist affiliate of the Institute on Religion and Democracy. The name remains the same

So after all of that, we literally cast ballots (polished stones) into 4 baskets with 4 possible names: Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd St Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church One Bread One Body Episcopal Church and a late contender, which wasn’t even considered as a choice before a “straw poll” last week St Nicholas (with or without “Holy Innocents” added to the name). Previously, there had been a lot of sentiment towards a completely new name, especially (and surprisingly) from the former St Nicholas people. The former Holy Innocents people were all for a completely new identity, or almost all…

    Tutu: Our Lord Is Weeping

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu of Cape Town, South Africa (a personal Anglican hero of mine) writes to his successor,  on the current unpleasantness: The Nobel Peace Prize laureate’s plea came in a letter to the present Archbishop of Cape Town, Njongonkulu Ndungane, in which [Tutu] also called on all Anglican bishops to be “more welcoming and inclusive of one another.” Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town Desmond Tutu has appealed to Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams to invite all bishops to the 2008 Lambeth Conference, “even those irregularly consecrated or actively gay.” …”Our Communion has always been characterized by its comprehensiveness,…

The collapse of Karl Rove | Salon News

The collapse of Karl Rove | Salon News In Pennsylvania, Judge Jones’ angry repudiation of the Christian majority on the school board was both a portent and part of the dissolution of the union over which Rove presided in 1994 in Fort Worth. Jones, a Tom Ridge protégé, was unequivocal in asserting the primacy of the Separation Clause over the religious interests of local governing bodies. Like this moderate judge, the larger public — and even the Republican Party, if the candidacy of Rudy Giuliani means anything — has grown weary of the Christian right. It was a marriage as…

    Better Late than Never

I finally got around to viewing the DVD, which I purchased from the Field Museum’s shop – they have an entire section of their very large shop devoted to fair trade items and environmentally-sensitive gifts. In spite of my pre-2000 dismissal of former Vice President Al Gore Jr. as a slightly dorky wonk, I was very moved by his presentation and the lifelong passion he’s had for learning about the environment, and for raising the alarm about climatic change. Yes, it’s annoying that he uses buzzwords and talking points, just like the Republicans, but also it’s incredibly frustrating and sobering…
