    Let’s Call It Lactase Non-Persistence in 2013!

Here at Chez Gique this topic comes up pretty often, because one of us can’t drink milk or eat soft cheese without experiencing Tummy Problems. The other one eats and drinks dairy products with impunity. It’s sometimes an issue when eating out or at family dinners, though. Got milk? Ancient European farmers who made cheese thousands of years ago certainly had it. But at that time, they lacked a genetic mutation that would have allowed them to digest raw milk’s dominant sugar, lactose, after childhood.Today, however, 35 percent of the global population — mostly people with European ancestry — can…

A friend of mine who works at the Library of Congress has been doing a lot of research on the works of Rudyard Kipling and had been running down references to Kiplings Oregon adventures, since she's a native Oregonian and naturally interested. Some of her research into a place locally known as 'Kipling's Rock' has proved that it's the spot associated with with the "fishing trip" episode in Kipling's American travelogue and she's been involved with getting the spot officially named by the state. She was contacted for this article and pointed me to it in a phone conversation. I'm…

    Heh. Kismet or Karma?

Floyd Corkins, the 28-year-old Virginia man who allegedly shot a security guard in the Family Research Council headquarters in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday because of the group’s opposition to gay marriage, could be prosecuted under a hate crimes statute. The FRC would rather he wasn’t. While the FRC has specifically opposed expanding hate crimes protections to individuals targeted for violent attacks because of their sexual orientation or gender identity because they believe it “sends the false message that deviant sexual behaviors are somehow equivalent to other categories of protection such as race or sex,” the group also opposes any hate…

    Left Unsaid

Riley is doing pretty well on his kitty chemo regimen. Work is good, my desk will be next to a window starting Monday. My doctor is now satisfied that my weird blood tests are “normal for me.” But, ow. We’re looking forward to vacation in a few weeks, but trying to stay flexible. Family is mostly good, though there is lots that must remain unsaid. Church is good, but need to catch up on some updates for the website.
