Jay Allen, of MT-Blacklist/Comment Spam Clearinghouse fame, generously recommends Brad Choate's Spam Lookup as a more comprehensive solution to webspam/commentspam/trackspam. The nightly build (which fixes a bug in beta 2) is here. So, in short, for spamkilling purposes on the new and improved MT3.16 version of the blog, I think I'd like to give "Spam Lookup" a whirl. I like MT-Blacklist, but it's kind of slow, and the cross-blog functionality alone makes it possible for me to open up the 'Quicklinks' sideblog comments. Plus… hey, I think I could eventually bring the Holy Moly blog under its wing, too. Hmm.…

David, the sneaky sneakster, upgraded the beta blog to MT3.16, and I'm at the "tweaking templates to look right with the new stylesheet" stage. Still some archive templates to be fixed so they display the new banner image and colors. I will be going through all the templates looking for inconsistencies that may be lurking there from my old installation, but I'm pleased that the latest version is a new commitment to quality (and bugfixes). Via About Six Apart – Mena's Corner UPDATE: as previously stated, I've got some template tweaks to do. And the cool crap is getting cut…

Within the legal limits: At least one legislator promises to vote against any bills targeting poker houses. "What I know about those clubs is that you are not gambling," said Rep. Greg Hughes, R-Draper, who has played at Big SLC on three occasions, but is obviously uncomfortable talking about it. "I enjoy poker. . . . Recreationally, of course. . . . Within the legal limits," he said between long pauses. The clubs "deserve as little government intervention as any other law-abiding club or group." Former Republican legislator David Zolman plays once a week and ranks in the top 20…

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Countdown to shuttle return flight And it’s about time. High time we got back into the space business and dealt with the challenges rather than just analyzing and memorializing them. We’ve been relying on the Russians to keep the International Space Station supplied, crewed, and (more or less) repaired and it’s time we got back in the game. There’s an air of real purpose, a desire to convince visitors like me that technical problems have been overcome, that the can-do spirit that caught the public imagination back in the Sixties to the moon is alive…

Friday wasn’t such a great time. We went to the holiday party for David’s company, and it seemed to start off well – lots of people, nice wine to drink, and they didn’t have the creepy, smarmy DJ that they’ve had in years past. They started things off with a fun trivia contest that got everyone at our table laughing and chatting more than in previous years (the employees yak just fine, but the spice tend to sit there trying to make conversation). And then they served dinner, and then I got sick. Sort of. It was really weird –…

since my husband David is quite familiar with the community at DSL Reports, I thought he’d be interested in this item from Boing Boing: Shaw is censoring Internet feeds and lying about it – because DSL Reports did the outing.

BBC NEWS | Technology | US duo in first spam conviction Now that's GOOD news. Amazingly, they made a fortune estimated at $24m selling useless crap to stupid people. All AOLers, alas (I still retain my AOL account for old times' sake, but I read it behind 3 anti-spam filters and a firewall).

my husband David and I had a chance to test-drive a Ford Escape Hybrid today – meaning a partly gas-powered, partly electric-powered vehicle (a decent sized SUV) that gets great gas mileage and is touted as environmentally friendly. The technology behind it is interesting, innovative, and impressive from my point of view, since it’s designed to be fully integrated and automatic. There is no maintenance required on the battery pack and it never need be recharged (in fact, it can’t be recharged the way it’s designed) because it is continuously recharged by either the generator motor or by “regenerative braking.”…

David was disappointed we were going to miss the total lunar eclipse tonight, but it turns out there will be a webcast. Yay!! UPDATE: I don’t know if the webcast sites will be any good, but the moon is visible through light haze at the moment, with a small bite taken out of the lower lleft quadrant. David’s trying something fancy with his camera involving a tripod, a long lens, and a hat. We’ll see if it works.

Now you can lose weight AND go ballistic (repeatedly, but temporarily) for only $3000 – take a ride with Zero-G NoGravity.com It reportedly includes several great gimmes, but there might be one gotcha: light breakfast, lunch and dinner provided. Barf bags complimentary, I trust. via BoingBoing
