    New Affiliate! Windows Media!

I found a new AAR affiliate that uses Windows Media – WKIZ Radio The direct link is http://www.contactmeo.com/56k.asx This is huge. The sound quality isn’t that good, but this means that I’m no longer dependent on the KPOJ stream, and also it means that I can listen to Randi Rhodes in the afternoon, whose show KPOJ doesn’t carry. With the link set to “classic Windows media” and minimized to play in the task bar, I can now flip back and forth between talky-talk radio and KUNC’ss eclectic music. Yay!

    The Conventional Al Franken

Not only will Al be doing his show, he’ll be a special correspondent for The Majority Report each evening. If you weren’t satisfied with Rush Limbaugh’s coverage of the 2000 Democratic Convention, you’re in luck: this year, there’s an alternative. We promise that our take on things will be different from his. That’s right, he’ll be on MR nightly, with Janeane Garofalo and Sam Seder. Should make for some fun conversations if the convention coverage on the major networks starts to drag.

    Clear Channel Signs Air America

Clear Channel Communications, Inc., has signed a deal to broadcast Air America Radio on its Miami outlet, WINZ-AM, RadioInk reported Friday. Oh, delicious irony – citing both the popularity of Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 and AAR’s great ratings make it irresistable to a network that supposedly has strong corporate ties to the Bush League. And CC execs are also aware that putting a liberal radio show in South Florida, aka Electoral Ground Zero, can’t hurt ratings in a presidential election year.

    Need To Read

I was listening to AAR – Majority Report just now for the first time in a while, and happened on an interesting discussion with George Lakoff, author of Moral Politics : How Liberals and Conservatives Think. It’s very interesting. He proposes that political views can be categorized by two family archetypes, the Strict Father and the Nurturing Parent. As he spoke listing the attributes and belief systems of each model, it made our current political system of dysfunctional polarism sound more and more like Family Feud. There’s a lot more about how to take back control of the national debate…

    Roger Morris on AAR Today

Roger Morris is a guest on AAR today – this is his “Call to Conscience” piece referenced on the AAR/O’Franken Factor blog. Their link points to Salon.com, this one points to Commondreams.org. The Diplomat who quit over Nixon’s Invasion of Cambodia asks Americans on the front lines of Foreign Service to resign from the “Worst Regime by far in the History of the Republic.” Interesting reading. As it happens I booked someone (tentatively) to go to Phnom Penh via Saigon today. Actually, via Ho Chi Minh City, but the airport code is still SGN. Oh, and there’s an audio link…

Sorry, My Ass Just Fell Off

CHICAGO (Reuters) – For want of a small change to the Illinois election law, President Bush’s name is not supposed to be on the state’s November ballot, but officials said one way or another, it will be there. The glitch arose because the Illinois legislature adjourned earlier this week without extending the Aug. 30 deadline for presidential candidates to be certified by the state elections board and qualify for the Nov. 2 ballot. Oh! Oh! There went my ass again. It keeps falling off today. First, Al Franken gets tortured on his show, because Ann Coulter said it had to…

    Take That, Naysayers

Despite ongoing financial woes, Air America Radio appears to have garnered a significant audience during its first month on the air, particularly among the younger listeners sought by advertisers. An analysis of recently released figures from Arbitron, the radio ratings service, showed that in New York Air America beat Rush Limbaugh’s station among 25-to-54-year-olds during the period that Limbaugh and Al Franken, the host of the flagship show “The O’Franken Factor,” go head-to-head. AAR did a lot better in the ratings than expected. That’s one in the eye for all the conservablather I’ve seen in recent news articles and columns…

    Breath of Fresh Air, O’Reilly

I’ve been hearing about Terry Gross’ interview with Bill O’Reilly for months and months, and now Boing Boing reports that O’Reilly may be trying to bury the interview. A lot of the interview concerned Al Franken’s book Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right, which satirized O’Reilly and other neoconservatives. The link from the Fresh Aire site includes a swaggering, bullying clip from O’Reilly’s show the next day.

    White Knight and His Lady?

The Highland Park couple that founded the precursor to Air America Radio before selling most of it to a group of investors are in negotiations to gain control of the troubled liberal talk network, sources said Thursday. Sources familiar with the negotiations said Sheldon and Anita Drobny want to buy–with the aid of at least one major new investor–a majority stake in the company. I wasn’t able to listen to AAR much on the trip, and now it’s the weekend so I have to wait until Monday to hear “Majority Report.”
