Next must-read book: How Would a Patriot Act? Defending American Values from a President Run Amok by Glenn Greenwald How Would a Patriot Act? is one man’s story of being galvanized into action to defend America’s founding principles, and a reasoned argument for what must be done. Greenwald’s penetrating words should inspire a nation to defend the Constitution from a president who secretly bestowed upon himself the powers of a monarch. If we are to remain a constitutional republic, Greenwald writes, we cannot abide radical theories of executive power, which are transforming the very core of our national character, and…

Someone helpfully made Steven Colbert’s roast (or hilarious incineration) of President Bush available on YouTube. YouTube – Colbert Roasts Bush 1-3 UPDATE: But then it was eventually removed from YouTube at C-SPAN’s request. However, it’s now popped up on Google Video – apparently with C-SPAN’s permission. You can watch it here. I’m about to settle down and watch it. Did not fail to notice the President’s body language and “screw you guys, I’d like to go home and go to bed, but Laura won’t let me” expression as Colbert was called to the podium. LATER: Yes, that was pretty amusing,…

Neil Young’s latest, much anticipated album went “live” on this website yesterday. The music is streaming for free, but not for download, so it’s not quite “free.” But you can listen, and the lyrics are sort of available – you click on the song title to see them stream across the screen ticker-style (and if you click the license plate to see the title list and get to where the ticker scrolls, the music cuts off). It sounds pretty rough – reportedly, it was written, recorded, and marketed in a hurry. There’s a lot of feedback – and I bet…

And after that rant, I need to just chill and get in touch with my inner Pink. Whose video Stupid Girls, by the way, is awe-inspiring if a little raw. Stupid girl, stupid girls, stupid girls Maybe if I act like that, that guy will call me back Porno Paparazzi girl, I don’t wanna be a stupid girl Go to Fred Segal, you’ll find them there Laughing loud so all the little people stare Looking for a daddy to pay for the champagne (Drop a name) What happened to the dreams of a girl president She’s dancing in the video…

Oh, happy, happy, joy joy! I am just busting with glee over the spoilers in the link below to the SciFi channel site. It concerns: season 2, which is airing in Britain but won’t air here for a long time, and major characters. I will only say, DO NOT CLICK on the link unless you want to be spoiled about next season, and in particular about one specific episode next season. I’m not even going to hint. Sci Fi Wire — The News Service of the Sci Fi Channel I will just say, though, that I’m a long-time fan, and……

Oh, I might just have to have this. Amazon.com: Law and Order: 20th Anniversary Edition: Music: The Crazy 8’s Because the Crazy 8’s were my favorite, favorite, dripping wet with sweat favorite dance/party band in college and after. I was first introduced to their infectious brand of funky saxy ska at a show in… Springfield, OR at a place that was called “Edison’s Bar and Grill.” It was a funky place with books and boyhood memoriabilia that was nailed or glued or screwed down so bar patrons couldn’t swipe it, but it had a big stage and a big dance…

My wacky British chum Mrs Blubridge has been very quiet of late, but now she’ll be completely full of herself. My copy of GUS OPENSHAW’S WHALE-KILLING JOURNAL : A Novel finally arrived, and in the acknowledgements section at the back is this little item: This book wouldn’t have left the dock without Gus Openshaw’s digital shipmates, the bloggers who took part in the hunt via the internet, offering support, advice, navigational aid, and in one case, access to NASA satellite feed to help locate the blubbery bastard. They are: Annie, Bard Sinister, Bastardess, Blueberry, Mrs. Blubridge, JCanuck, Trish Cavendish, Edna,…

ionarts The start of the Gloria was more ceremonial than alarming. The opening orchestral jolts were not delivered with the expected energy. However, the first entry of the full chorus projected so much power that I was “electrified.†In the Laudamus Te, Shafer demonstrated that he could do anything with this huge body of voices. The movement was effervescently performed, with a marvelous lightness of touch. The singing was so gorgeous that the audience impetuously began to applaud at the movement’s end. My friend Debbie sings in the Washington Chorus, and I enjoy our long cozy chats by phone about…

I decided to take a photo of something I use every single workday – actually two things. That’s my handmade, wide-bottomed coffee mug, bought when we went on a road trip to Starved Rock State Park. Every weekday morning without fail, I fill the thing with coffee, at least twice. And the green folder underneath it is the hated group hotels file, one of my least favorite tasks. Still, I do it to the best of my abilities, and today I got an award at work – kind of the runner-up award to the big one, which involves travel to…
