David was out of town for a couple of days this week, leaving me to knock around in the evenings watching weird shows he doesn’t like and saving up most of TiVo’s good stuff for when he got home, which was last night. I watched a whole lot of Hoarders, some Intervention, a couple of nice old movies, and random stuff… but I made sure to watch this week’s Stargate: Universe because it’s an interesting take on familiar science fiction themes. Unlike other “Lost In Space” type shows, there’s conflict between characters, people can die or be seriously injured, and…

A good friend from college is currently taking an epic early-retirement trip – she bought an Amtrak USA Rail Pass and she’s been making her way across country from California, visiting friends. She was at the taping of Prairie Home Companion in Minneapolis, and then she hopped on the Empire Builder to get to Chicago. She’ll come out our way tonight on a Metra commuter train, and will stay for a few days. Meanwhile, we now have a guest room again – after we finished the final floor project, we moved out of the guest room back into the master…

We watched Real Time with Bill Maher last night and enjoyed this clip from the 90’s “Politically Incorrect” show Maher used to have. Turns out he and Christine O’Donnell go back a ways, and she’s always been a little… odd in her beliefs. And this is the person that Delaware conservatives want representing them? Seriously? Of course, no one was at their best in the era of big mall hair, but it’s really hard to imagine this person actually formulating policy as an actual adult. BBC News – Hampshire workmen paint white lines around dead badger. Hampshire workmen paint white lines around dead badger The dead badger has been removed and the lines will be painted Workmen painting white lines on a road left a gap for a dead badger because they said it was not their responsibility to move it. The animal had been killed about a week before on the A338 near Downton, on the Hampshire-Wiltshire border. Hampshire County Council said the workers did what they thought “was best” because it is the district council’s job to remove carcasses. The badger has now…

Dan Brown’s scat-illogical* books are at the top of the Oxfam list of books most likely to be donated to the charity, which runs a chain of 686 second-hand bookshops. But the Top Gear presenter my husband David and I most love to hate is the first non-fiction author to make the Oxfam list of “most donated” books. The rants of Jeremy Clarkson, meanwhile, have made the Top Gear presenter the first non-fiction writer to enter the charity’s top 10 of authors most likely to be donated to its 686 shops: either his readers are notably generous, or unwilling to…

No matter the beauty flaw, there’s a tool to roll it away. Nose too fat? There’s a roller for that. Jowls dangling? Roll them away. Cheeks sagging? Roll them up. Cottage cheese thighs? Roll them bye-bye.

Thank goodness I can get some at the local Japanese supermarket for a variety of dry skin needs!

Of all the many tributes and stories remembering the life and career of Dan Schorr, Scott Simon’s was the one that that moved me most. Schorr wasn’t a teddy bear; he pissed presidents and premiers off, as well as colleagues, columnists, and Congressmen. NPR’s Scott Simon Remembers Daniel Schorr : NPR No other journalist in memory saw as much history as Daniel Schorr. He was born the year before the Russian Revolution and lived to see the Digital Revolution. He was there before the Berlin Wall went up and there a generation later when it came down. He was born…
