Salt Lake Tribune – Mullen: Farewell, and thanks for reading This is my final column for The Tribune. Every action in life has a trigger. Last weekend, a good friend and editor pulled my Sunday column. I got mad. We had a serious discussion. The column did not run. I fear he blames himself for my decision to quit. But it goes beyond one dispute. In context, this event served me well. I needed a jolt. I need to reboot. I'm leaving the best job and newspaper in Utah. Damn! I've enjoyed reading Holly Mullen's columns. I've even…

One Utah » Blog Archive » Mitt Romney and The Mormon Question My frustration, like so many who have faced their church of birth, is that in my own mind only, obviously not in reality; but in my own pain, is that if I inhale hugely, the structure trembles, and threatens either to kill me or to collapse; and if I exhale, I blow it away, so much so that it can’t help me, and I really need it’s help; and I can’t help them, since I’ve tried so very hard to do so, and I’ve had success only once,…

Salt Lake Tribune – Reid proof that good Mormons can also be Democrats Sen. Harry Reid's ascension to the top of the U.S. Senate is an unexpected victory for a tiny band of beleaguered Utahns: LDS Democrats. His most vocal critics? Other Mormons. Despite the fact that Reid held weekly Family Home Evenings and sent three sons on two-year missions for the church, and all five of his children were married in LDS temples, some members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints question his faith because of his politics. Utah politics defy description for anyone outside the…

Salt Lake Tribune – Federal agency sues U. of Phoenix for alleged Mormon bias Sure, it’s an online university without walls, but some department head or other in Arizona was probably very surprised to find out he (it’ll be a he) can’t run things like a local waaaaaard meeting, and shun the unbelievers like he had been. It amazes me, frankly, when these cases come up, because they’re so… 50 years ago. Utah, and to some extent the states bordering it, is in a spiritual time warp. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed suit accusing the University of…

Pete Ashdown’s Campaign Journal Sign War It appears that the “sign war†has begun. Last night, all of our signs in the Salt Lake Foothill area magically disappeared, including a 10 foot banner that was zip-tied to a brick wall. All of the signs, including the banner, were on private property. Equally magical is the fact that Republican signs have suddenly appeared in the same area. I wonder what my sisters have to say about this? One of them lives in the Foothill area. And what about this item? Interestingly, Republican Party County Chairman James Evans who had presided…

Police seek warrant for second person in Mormon scriptures theft Late Tuesday or early Wednesday, someone broke through a window at the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Memorial Museum and stole 12 rare editions of the Book of Mormon and one rare copy of the Doctrine and Covenants. They’ll catch the second man soon. It will be interesting to know if the thefts were meant for the rare documents market, or if they were meant for a more specialized, ultra-conservative religious documents market. Hmm.

Polygamist Judge Ordered Off Utah Bench – Yahoo! News SALT LAKE CITY – A small-town judge with three wives was ordered removed from the bench by the Utah Supreme Court on Friday. The court unanimously agreed with the findings of the state’s Judicial Conduct Commission, which recommended the removal of Judge Walter Steed for violating the state’s bigamy law. ADVERTISEMENT Steed has served for 25 years on the Justice Court in the polygamist community of Hildale in southern Utah, where he ruled on misdemeanor crimes such as drunken driving and domestic violence cases. Oh, yeah, that was brilliant – put…

Salt Lake Tribune – Salt Lake Tribune Home Page Women’s ‘pill bill’ dies again Contraception: Planned Parenthood director tells lawmakers to provide ‘health care that eliminates the need for abortion’ Insurance and business leaders gave the all-male (emphasis Blogula Rasa’s) Senate Health and Human Services Committee the reasons they were looking for to kill the so-called “pill bill” for the eighth year in a row Wednesday – complaints about unfunded mandates, health care costs and meddling in the marketplace. Sen. Scott McCoy, a Salt Lake City Democrat, argued SB42 would simply put in law what most Utah insurance companies already…

Salt Lake Tribune – Salt Lake Tribune: Evolution bill survives by a vote A proposal targeting evolution survived its toughest challenge Wednesday when it eked out of a House committee by one vote. SB96, which requires teachers to say the state doesn’t endorse any theory involving the “origins of species,” needs only the support of the full House to pass the Legislature after gaining approval by the House Education Committee 7-6. The bill is the brainchild of Sen. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan, who is disgusted that some educators teach that humans have a common ancestor with chimpanzees. Please don’t make…
