    Rib fest

It’s kind of hard to tell in this photo, but the big jug of “Ausom Aussie” BBQ sauce has a handwritten warning that says says “HOT HOT HOT HOT!”. David and I and our friends Joe, Lisa, and their son Anthony went to Naperville yesterday for Ribfest, a big barbecue and music festival. I didn’t realize when we got on the grounds how big it was and how many different booths there were for different permutations of slow-grilled ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, and lots of other “food booth” fare. It wasn’t actually that hot a day, but there was no…

    Moblog: Steve’s Prius

All right, that’s a bit better. I still have to manually add the category and upload the photo to the right directory, but that’s almost as good as Mfop2 could do. Here’s Steve in his new Prius. His car is different than ours… it starts with the push of a button. We’re thinking of starting a club for hybrid car owners in the area, and might have a few people at the “Holy Rollers Classic Car Show” event at Holy Moly (which is July 10th if anyone was thinking of dropping by). The Return of Moblog (Sort Of)

Gack. Well, I clearly have some more work to do with templates and such. Here’s my first attempt to fix the post; I think I’ve got the Flickr template set right but that’ll be another test. I had to remember (duh) that Firefox now requires image size to be specified in order to display the float properly without busting the middle column out all over. Original upload: GinnyRED57.

    David’s New Car

Yes, that’s David’s new car, a Ford Escape Hybrid. We just drove it home from Woodfield Ford, and frankly, we’re in shock. In a good way. Because we got a good deal and we didn’t have to wait weeks and weeks and weeks for delivery, like some new hybrid owners. First off, what’s a hybrid? It’s a partly gas-powered, partly battery powered car. There’s different kinds of technology involved; this particular vehicle has what’s called a “first generation” power plant. The Ford site explains how it works We weren’t planning on driving the demo car off the lot, but that’s…

    Ginny’s Old Car

Okay, this is what I was faced with yesterday – a borrowed car that was somehow even dirtier than mine. We were in the process of selling my, so to further that goal I swapped cars with a prospective buyer. Although he did not ultimately buy it, he did find someone else who will, so it’s all good. I got my car back today, but I won’t be driving it anymore… it’s suddenly turned into my old car much quicker than expected.

    Signs and Portents

Ugh, this sign looks terrible. I took a picture of it so that I’d have an image handy on my phone to show to a signmaking place near us. We’ve changed service times so many times we just started writing it on vinyl tape with magic markers. There’s no way we can afford to get the entire sign replaced… and now the tape is totally peeling off. Lovely. Needless to say, I’ll be looking into getting either vinyl magnetic labels with the summer and winter service times, or maybe stick-on slides.

    The Reproaches

I’ve got the music we’re singing for Good Friday here at work with me, just looking it over and humming long more or less at the right pitch. And I’ve got chocolate tempting me, though I’m going to try not to eat it until at least noon. David’s home today and I won’t get to see him again until probably 9pm. Last night, I got home from the Maundy Thursday service at… 1020pm or so. And then Saturday night, well it goes to 11. Though we don’t really sing that much louder. Anyway, the piece we’re singing tonight is called…

Scrimshaws and Pirates and Books, Oh My

My recent trip gave me a chance to see some actual scrimshaw up close and personal, rather than the sort often seen at Gus’s or Nelson’s blogs. Hey! I’m about to get my copy of that book wot Gus wrote (with the kind assistance of some ghostwriter guy since Gus is a wanted man in Venezuela and several small, independently fiesty Caribbean island nations). Gus thinks they moved up the publication date. Smart of them, since the book has been selling fairly briskly in pre-sales. Please DON’T Let It Snow!

The weather report this morning was quite firm about it: it would start snowing at around 9am, and it would carry on snowing all day, and winter would continue indefinitely. Here’s proof: a suitably mysterious yet evocative photo that shows snow, cold outdoor glass sheathing, and ghostly reflections (because it was taken from INSIDE one of the covered walkways, it’s too cold to prance around in the snow taking artsy pix). And yes, the one cow-orker who insists against all reason, aesthetics or fashion sense on wearing shorts whenever “it’s 50 degrees!” is in her white shorts and Keds today,…

    It’s A Gas, Gas, Gas

So we drove up to the top of Haleakala, the House of the Sun, on Maui. And then we noticed that we had 1/16th of a tank of gas and we were 20 miles from the nearest gas station. So went back down Haleakala, the House of the Sun, in neutral. Whee! And singing the Adventurer’s Song. Typically, we bust out singing when things are going really, really well on a trip and we’re feeling a little chuffy about it, or things are not going very well and we’re trying to raise our spirits for being goofs on parade. We…
