What Laundry Day Looks Like At Chez Gique

My husband David did one load. The rest of the mountain of laundry is awaiting us upstairs, in the bedroom/laundry dump. Now that we’re both working out (at sundry health clubs) there’s even more laundry to be done, and critically stinky laundry at that. Cartoon by Dave Walker. Anderson window installation …one done

UPDATE: The window installers worked like dogs yesterday and got all but one set of windows downstairs and the patio doors installed, and then stayed until 730pm clearing out debris and vacuuming more thoroughly than…uh… more thoroughly than the housekeeping staff generally do around here. 🙄 They’re here again, right on the dot of 8am, just as promised. We have a lot of touch-up repairs to the window edges – plastering or spackling will need to be re-done where it fell off the metal strips on the inside of the windows, and it will need to be painted. And, guess…

    Windows 2006

The “measure tech” is here from Anderson Windows to do the precision measurements on all the windows we’re getting replaced with energy efficient vinyl-composite. Notes on installation of new windows: Will need to not only remove existing blinds, but remove brackets and reinstall them. We discussed the trim around the patio door; it will be replaced with trim that matches the floor we had installed 2 years ago. Exterior decorative shutters (fake ones) are probably not going to survive and we’ll probably have to replace them. Background: several weeks ago David and I decided to do something about the windows in the house,…

    Brownouts… got candles?

What fun, the thunderstorm they warned us about today hit pretty much right on schedule – the temperature dropped 15 degrees in just a few minutes once the rain finally started. Earlier, David and I went out front to watch the lightning, which was confined to just the high clouds, but it was flashing constantly. At least it will be cool enough to sleep tonight – the air conditioning unit for this house is a little underpowered – and I’ve got candles going in case we lose power in the next few minutes. It’s constantly rumbling overhead with thunder –…

    Up A Blind Alley

You know, it’s a little bit funny, as the family joke has it. David and Ginny should never attempt an “easy home installation” without having a backup plan that doesn’t include having to find obsure little details on home-repair troubleshooting websites. Or needing a time out. Still, we eventually succeeded – at least, David figured it out while I lent immoral support. David attempted to install some double-wide blinds in the bedroom while I was away this morning. I returned to find him stumped, because one bracket was too tight, causing all the other brackets to fail to engage. Thus,…

    Jiggety, Etc.

It’s just so good to be home. It was even good to be at work. Hmm. I wonder why you can be home, but you can’t be work? It’s probably not that healthy to be work all the time, though. There wasn’t a horrible amount of backlog, but there were a couple of things that needed attention when I got in. It was actually pleasant dealing with manageable problems for a change.

    WBEZ Goes Talk (YAY!)

WHAT ABOUT ALL THAT JAZZ? | Chicago Tribune I don’t know, but the schedule looks like there’s still plenty of jazz on it. I can tell you that around here, the moment the jazz starts playing in the evenings and Sunday afternoons, off goes the radio with a snap.

    Hybrids Good News For Ford

Ford’s April U.S. sales dip 7%; cars gain – MarketWatch Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford said it sold 262,722 cars and trucks in April, with the Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr sedans as well as the crossover Ford Escape and Freestyle posting gains as consumers moved away from the automaker’s more gas-thirsty vehicles. “These new, fuel-efficient cars are helping our dealers to retain owners and capture new ones,” said Al Giombetti, head of Ford and Lincoln Mercury sales. “We never have been in a better position to compete for customers in an environment of rising gasoline prices.” On the downside, Ford’s…

Holy Crap, This Is A Big Storm

It’s been raining and thundering and lightning off and on for a couple of hours. Just now, things started to get very noisy outside – heavy rain… WHOA! We lost power for a couple of minutes after a lightning strike very close by. Suddenly, I was completely in the dark, which is not all that uncommon for me, frankly. After a few seconds my eyes adjusted enough to find the proper keys on my laptop to hibernate, so I pulled the plug and shut down. Grabbed a flashlight, because I had heard David holler and figured he was down in…
