Quilting: Trying Rebecca Grace’s Method To Join Batting

The table runner that’s been a UFO (unfinished quilting object) for more than a year is nearing completion.  Now it’s time to put it on a long strip of batting, backed with a long strip of backing fabric, in a “quilt sandwich.” But oh noes, the fabric I plan to use isn’t long enough, so I’m piecing a center panel with leftover “primary table runner” strips (this is all from a 2 1/2” strip set by Robert Hoffman called “Desertscapes”) and I also have to piece the batting from one double wide piece that wasn’t quite long enough.

It’s been long enough since I last did this that I had to experiment with various zigzag stitches, with a primitive sampler.

Sampler of various zigzag and satin stitches

Don’t like the satin stitch, do like this wider, expanded triple or quadruple step zigzag method by Rebecca Grace, which saves a LOT of thread. Her method uses 3 step zigzag, think I’d rather have 2 stitches on either side of the gap and used a S12 stitch on my Brother PS500. It’s just enough to tack together, and the quilt stitching holds it secure once it’s all assembled and bound.

Here’s my settings after messing with the sampler.
