If You Read The Salt Lake Tribune, You’ll Learn Words Like “Obongocare”

Many years ago, when I was young and still stuck living in Utah, one of my guilty pleasures was reading the "Letters to the Editor" and shaking my head in wonder and disgust at some of the attitudes expressed there. Once upon a time, the minor impediment of having to write a letter, stamp and address an envelope, and mail one's important opinions to the editorial page address prevented all but the most highly motivated crackpots from weighing in. In the Internet age, the filters are off, the chocks are away. You can fly into the wild blue yonder to…

Still No Amazon Affiliates Love For Illinois

As a resident of Illinois, I can’t participate in the Amazon Affiliates program due to a law passed in the state awhile back that was supposed to protect brick-and-mortar businesses from online businesses that didn’t charge Illinois tax. I thought maybe that might have changed since there had been some stories about the law being ruled unconstitutional, but not according to this newly updated boilerplate from the Amazon Affiliates page. I still get their emails, I just have to keep hoping this will change someday. In addition, if at any time following your enrollment in the Program you become a…

The Guardian’s 1000 novels everyone must read: the definitive list (from 2009)

How many of these books have you read? How many would you like to read? I’ve read a small fraction of the books on this list, but a whole lot more authors and books are missing in action. Admittedly, this list is pretty heavy on British authors. Selected by the Guardian’s Review team and a panel of expert judges, this list includes only novels – no memoirs, no short stories, no long poems – from any decade and in any language. Originally published in thematic supplements – love, crime, comedy, family and self, state of the nation, science fiction and…
