The “Rally Base” Button Is Broken

Democrat Wins House Seat in Mississippi – New York Times They sent Cheney. They sent Barbour. They sent Huckabee. They had Bush and McCain record robocalls.  And still the Republicans lost the Mississippi special election, the third “bellweather” election they’ve lost this year.  It appears the vaunted Republican “rally base!!1!” button must be broken.

    Hagee in the hot seat

Pastor who endorsed McCain apologizes for remarks about Catholics – Los Angeles Times Commenters on liberal-Christian, Episcopalian blogs I read have been complaining for weeks about John Hagee’s apparent invisibility on the media radar, while Rev. Wright was in the crosshairs of the right wing, hoping to pick off Obama from a tangent. Well, what goes around comes around; McCain’s pet pastor, whose support he needs in order to gain grudging favor from the religious right, finally gains albatross status.

Jet Blue Sued, In Deep Doo-Doo

Man sues airline over flight spent in toilet | Oddly Enough | Reuters But Mutlu was allowed to board after a JetBlue flight attendant agreed to give up her seat and travel in an airline employee “jump seat.” It was not clear in the lawsuit whether the flight attendant was working. Witnesses said the parishioners assumed it was the usual police over-zealousness and some of them remained seated. The police then began beating up people, including women, in the church. Bishop Bakare, who…

    Lunch!

My husband David took this picture of the ginormous bowl of steaming hot mussels we had before lunch yesterday. The broth was to die for – rich, savory, and totally worth sopping up with the hot herb bread. The waitress taught us this trick, bless her. The mussels were delicious and so was the lunch, and at this little shoreline restaurant we could watch the tide creep slowly in. It was fascinating to watch. It was in Cape Neddick, I think, and it was just a little place along an inlet well inland from the ocean. Via: Flickr Title: Lunch!…

St Columba’s Episcopal Church, Pentecost Sunday

It’s hard to tell here, but the Episcopal church in Boothbay Harbor is brand new, and made in a very clean and updated “shingle” style on the outside. On the inside it’s a clean, fresh, open plan space with a sanctuary that has a high wooden ceiling supported by big, nautical-looking timbers along the sides. The people were really open and welcoming, too. I had a number of great conversations with people and did my best to wave the big alto flag. They didn’t have a choir, but I had introduced myself to the organized, Eleanor, who became my buddy…
