“What Would Jesus Fly?”

I ran across this news item in the Chicago Trib today: Pilot urges passengers to discuss faith(subscription)

The Advocate had an interview they called “exclusive” with him, notable for the fact that after his “God told me to witness” announcement, some passengers were so creeped out by it that they tried to call relatives on cell phones.

And now, what do I think?

I think this pilot is a nut. I think anybody that feels the need to “share” that kind of unblinking belief from the pilot’s chair of a major airline’s aircraft is unbalanced. I think that a pilot that makes that kind of religion-centric remark is doing a disservice to the memory of other people on other airplanes – one of his own company’s, in fact – who died at the hands of religious fanatics.

Who, by the way, were also in the pilot’s chair making their own statements of faith.

I don’t care that he was really happy about his faith and the mission he just served in another country, that’s something private that he should have kept to himself. I find it interesting that some other religious people have chimed in on forums like airliners.com feel they must support the pilot’s outburst of “sharing” because they feel that Christianity itself is being attacked when other people object to having unwanted religious-based concepts forced upon them.

Hey! I like going to church! But it’s just RUDE talking about religion to someone without their consent. And not a little bit crazy and unbalanced.

Anybody that does so is, in my opinion, little better than the wild-eyed fanatics responsible for outrages throughout the ages, in the name of nearly every religion on Earth.
